Freedom Trail!...mostly a lot of old cemeteries
OK, so yesterday I decided to walk the Freedom Trail in Boston by myself. For those of you that don't know the Freedom Trail is a path through the city that takes you by different historical landmarks, mostly pertaining to the American Revolution. It is marked by either a red brick path or a red line painted on the sidewalk. It begins at Boston Common/the State House and continues all the way to the Bunker Hill Monument (actually on Breeds Hill where the battle was in fact fought, but thats a story for another day). Anyway I had nothing to do, am a history nerd, have no friends, and the trail was supposedly only 2.5 miles long. Furthermore it would give me a chance to see a lot of the city on foot. SEEMED LIKE A GREAT PLAN! Anyway I get my backpack together with some water and my MP3 player, essential for a long T ride and I hit the road. Let me begin by saying, there is no way that path is 2.5 miles...I refuse to believe that. Secondly, Breeds Hills is not near anything....and I mean anything. In either event I started my self guided tour rather optimistically, proceeding from Boston Common northward, taking some pictures where appropriate, but not really that many cause I didn't have anyone to take cool touristy pictures with. I should also note that I spent probably the first hour of the tour listening to Dizzee Rascal on my over-sized headphones. Anyway I made it past the normal landmarks old churches, schools, the state house, faneuil hall (can you really put 3 vowels together like that?), Union st, etc..Then came to the key moment crossing the Charles River. My goal had been to make it to Breeds Hill and get some idea of what the landscape was actually like. Little did i know that after crossing the Charles, I had quite a bit of walking left to do. As I made it to the USS Constitution I gave a long thought to turning back, because I would have to walk all the way back to the North End to get on the T anyway, but I couldn't back down from my ultimate goal. So, I bravely soldiered on. After finally reaching the monument, which might I add for those of you skeptical about the landscape, was in fact at the top of a rather large hill. I must say that marching up in a hail of gunfire would not be an ideal experience for a British Regular. I made it though, hot, sweaty, and still in my ray-bans. Upon reaching the summit I was pleased to find out I was in fact on Breeds Hill, making it in the historically correct location...yesssssss. Then it was time to go home. So, I walked back to North Station, got on the T and headed home arriving there only an hour and ten minutes later. THE END. so a few things to take from all this...
1) Has to be longer than 2.5 miles, that website is bullshit
2)Bring friends to help take hilarious pictures, touristy things are lame without that, mark my words
3) Take Water
any questions?
So that concludes my narrative, However I would like to fill you in on the most interesting part of my journey, which was going to the numerous cemeteries within the city limits. For one, they are really old which is cool and on top of that they are in the middle of downtown which is bizarre and therefore cool. My observations have little to do with this though and more with the decorative motifs of the headstones. To begin, I haven't been in a New England cemetery since beginning to study archaeology. One of the canonical studies in early American material culture was done on headstone decorative motifs in New England, noting the transitions between different imagery. I have to say when walking into the cemeteries it was one of the first things I noticed. I wont bore you with anymore on this, but on the simplest level it was really cool to see something you had learned in college in real life. Just a thought.
Rebirth
Its time for rebirth and no I don't mean the critically acclaimed rock album released by weezy f. baby, please say the baby, but rather a rebirth of our blog that had a relatively short and insignificant existence. This rebirth will hopefully reunite the writing staff and keep us in touch as we spread across the united states etc etc. Anyway I hope it will also save me from the boredom of living in a major city by myself and was ultimately inspired by my reading of Works and Days by the great poet Hesiod. If you haven t read it I probably wouldn t bother, I love classics and I even think its really stupid. Anyway I raise the torch as a kind of olympic opening ceremony and hopefully my esteemed colleague aaron will pick up the slack. Hopefully I will have at least halfway decent stories about boston, but if not the blog can die again and I probably wont care that much. Peace
